How we helped Buoy turn its most compliance-risky testimonials into its best-performing ads

The Strategy

Using Outers' competitor intelligence across the electrolyte and functional-wellness category, we found that most competitors were either playing it too safe (generic “stay hydrated” messaging that wasted Buoy's real differentiation) or too aggressive (implied medical claims that risked platform enforcement and regulatory exposure). We built Buoy's creative strategy around a middle path: let real customers describe how they feel, not what they were treating, and let specificity live in tone and emotion rather than clinical claims. Every recommended test paired an authentic-sounding hook with a script structure that had already been checked against what the category's compliant top performers were actually saying.

The Intelligence Layer

Mapping the Market

We map the brand against the market, looking at positioning, competitor activity, active ads, hooks, and recurring creative patterns to uncover where the real opportunities are.

Unique Challenges

Buoy's own product page is full of testimonials naming specific conditions (POTS, chronic illness, migraines) because that language is real and resonates deeply with the community it serves. But turning that same language into paid Meta creative meant walking directly into FDA/FTC supplement advertising restrictions, where implying disease treatment (even in a customer's own words) can trigger both platform rejection and real regulatory risk. We had to build a framework that preserved emotional authenticity while systematically stripping anything that crossed from feeling-based language into medical claim territory.

From Signal To Strategy

Turning Signals into Creative Direction

We turn those signals into clear creative direction, identifying what’s working, where the opportunity is, and which angle and hook to test next.

What Worked Well

We built a “compliant language” reference library derived from what was actually surviving both Meta review and FTC guidance across the wellness category, mapping which real testimonial phrases could be used as-is versus which needed reframing from a condition (“my POTS symptoms”) to a feeling (“my energy crashes”). UGC-style scripts using this reframed language consistently outperformed both fully clinical copy and the brand's own unedited organic testimonials for approval rate, and “add to your existing drink” demo-style creative outperformed lifestyle-only content once the language itself was dialed in. This gave Buoy a repeatable way to scale its most emotionally resonant material without gambling on compliance every time.
